Pasco County residents can claim a free tree through a new lottery system that opens for registration Sept. 21.
Pasco County Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources (PRNR) will give away 1,500 trees on Saturday, Oct. 10, at three county parks, according to a county news release. Residents can choose from four species: Dahoon Holly, Little Gem Magnolia, Red Cedar and Red Maple.
The giveaway marks a shift from the department's previous tree distribution events. PRNR said on its Facebook page that it doubled the number of trees available and added more varieties based on resident feedback. The department also replaced the old first-come, first-served format with a lottery, which it said will keep the process fair and cut down on wait times.
Only Pasco County residents may enter.
How to register
The lottery runs Monday, Sept. 21 through Thursday, Oct. 1. Residents sign up online through the Pasco County website using a webtrac account. The registration link was not yet live as of Sept. 14. The lottery opens Sept. 21 at pascocountyfl.gov.
Winners will be notified by Friday, Oct. 2.
