Lutz K-8 School emerges this week from a summer-long construction project that remodeled every classroom, hallway and office, replacing decades-old flooring and cabinetry throughout the building.

The work shut down the campus from the last day of school on Friday, May 29, through early August, forcing staff to relocate to Maniscalco K-8 for the duration. No staff member set foot in the building during that stretch, a gap of nearly 10 weeks.

Principal Joshua Phillips acknowledged the scale of the disruption in a welcome-back letter posted Monday, July 21. He described a campus that has been entirely gutted and rebuilt on the inside: old floors torn out and replaced wall to wall, aging cabinets pulled from every room and swapped for new ones. The project was extensive enough that the district could not allow even partial access during the work.

"We appreciate your patience and understanding as we reopen this year after a summer closure but are excited for the enhancements of new floors and cabinets," Phillips wrote.

Because the building remained sealed all summer, teachers will have only a short window before students arrive to arrange their remodeled classrooms. Phillips said staff are eager to reenter the campus and set up learning spaces that look nothing like the rooms they left in May.

Open house on Aug. 6 will give families first look at remodeled classrooms

Families attending the Meet the Teacher open house on Thursday, Aug. 6, will be the first to walk the updated hallways and see the remodeled classrooms in person. That event runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at the school, 202 Fifth Ave. SE in Lutz. Phillips noted the format is different this year: The first 30 minutes will focus solely on curriculum and learning expectations before families meet teachers. After that, parents and students can explore the refreshed spaces with their new teacher.

School holds on to A rating as district posts its own gains

Phillips also confirmed in the July 21 letter that Lutz K-8 retained its A rating for the 2026-2027 school year. The announcement comes weeks after Hillsborough County Public Schools earned its first A district grade from the Florida Department of Education in more than a decade on Tuesday, July 1. The number of A-rated schools districtwide rose to 74 from 70, according to the district.

The school's year-long theme is "Peace, Love, and Leopard Pride."

Early release marks first day; homeroom assignments post Aug. 4

The first day of school, Monday, Aug. 10, is an early release day. Dismissal will be at 1:10 p.m. instead of the regular 2:10 p.m. Tuesday-through-Friday schedule.

Homeroom teacher assignments will be posted in FOCUS, the district's online parent portal, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 4. That replaces the traditional email notification.

Daily arrival begins at 7:10 a.m., with classes starting at 7:40 a.m. Families with middle school students are asked to arrive for pickup after 2:17 p.m. to ease traffic flow. Drivers exiting the campus during arrival or dismissal should turn right only onto U.S. 41.
