Hillsborough County commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday, Oct. 21, to advance proposed restrictions on concentrated kratom products, according to FOX 13.

The proposal targets 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly called 7-OH, and related synthetic products. Commissioners have scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, Nov. 10. The board has not adopted the proposed county ordinance.

Whole-leaf kratom, including raw or dried leaves used to make tea, would remain outside the current draft’s scope, WFLA reported. Commissioners could consider broader restrictions at the hearing.

The debate is relevant to residents and businesses in unincorporated Hillsborough County, including Lutz and Odessa.

Families urge action

Parents who attributed their children’s deaths to kratom or kratom extracts spoke in favor of restrictions at the meeting. Dana McDonald was among the parents urging commissioners to act, according to both television stations.

Supporters of kratom disputed calls for broader restrictions. WFLA reported that a local smoke shop owner described it as an alternative to prescription pain medication and argued for responsible use.

Commissioner Joshua Wostal described the initial focus on 7-OH as a starting point. Commissioner Harry Cohen told WFLA that the board would consider additions to the draft at the Nov. 10 hearing.

Following the proposal

Residents should check the county’s official agenda page for the hearing notice, current draft and meeting details before attending. The county’s public participation page explains how to register for in-person or virtual comments.
