Steinbrenner High School's girls and boys swimming teams swept the Western Conference American Division championships in late September, and the girls followed with a Hillsborough County championship.
The girls scored 510 points at the conference meet, edging Plant by just two points for the division title. Steinbrenner's boys scored 465 points, finishing more than 100 points ahead of Sickles.
Girls add county championship
The girls carried that momentum into the 2026 Hillsborough County championship, where they won the team title and set a county championship record in the 400-yard freestyle relay, according to a Sept. 25 post from Steinbrenner High.
The boys finished fifth at the county meet.
Steinbrenner also picked up points in diving. A Warriors diver won the Western Conference diving championship before placing fifth at the county meet.
Senior swim captain Kylie Coles told the Oracle News, Steinbrenner's student newspaper, that the Warriors balanced the intensity of the competition with enjoying the experience.
"We all had so much fun at both meets while also locking in and doing well in our races," Coles said.
Roster depth gives Warriors an edge
Steinbrenner's coaches credited the depth of the girls' and boys' rosters with helping the Warriors accumulate points throughout the conference meet.
Several swimmers can compete in all four strokes, allowing the coaching staff to adjust lineups based on opponents' previous performances and place swimmers in events where they have the best opportunity to score.
That depth proved particularly important for the girls, whose two-point victory over Plant meant contributions throughout the lineup helped determine the championship.
The boys had considerably more breathing room, finishing more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Sickles.
The coaching staff told the Oracle that it studies opponents' previous results when constructing lineups, a strategy designed to maximize the team's scoring opportunities across individual events and relays.
Steinbrenner celebrates another trophy
The school celebrated the arrival of the girls' county championship trophy in a Sept. 29 post, saying the team had brought "another title back to Steinbrenner."
The conference sweep and girls' county championship marked a strong stretch for the Warriors as they continued their 2026 season
