Pasco-Hernando State College's women's soccer team earned its first conference win in program history, beating Pensacola State College 2-1 on Sept. 18 in Pensacola.
The Bobcats built a two-goal cushion before halftime and held on. Freshman Giada Chechile opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Sophomore Jada Lindo doubled the lead in the 35th minute with an unassisted goal, sending PHSC into halftime up 2-0.
Pensacola State pulled one back in the second half, but freshman goalkeeper Olivia Frazier kept the Pirates from equalizing. Frazier finished with eight saves on nine shot attempts.
Program milestone and coaching background
The PHSC athletics department called the result an upset. Pensacola State entered the series with a 1-5-1 record, but PHSC had been winless through its first four matches, including a 7-1 loss to Polk State College in early September.
The milestone comes in head coach Greg Calder's first season leading the program. PHSC hired Calder in July after he served as first assistant coach at NCAA Division I Jacksonville University, where he coordinated recruiting and worked with midfielders and strikers. Before JU, Calder spent three seasons as head women's soccer coach at Trinity College of Jacksonville, where he was named NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year in 2021, according to the Florida College System Activities Association.
"I want to thank the search committee for giving me the opportunity to join the Pasco Hernando State College staff," Calder said in July when the hire was announced. "A special thanks goes to Athletic Director Lyndon Coleman and Assistant AD Phil Gaffney."
Series conclusion and standings
PHSC dropped the second match of the weekend series to Pensacola State on Sept. 19, losing 5-3. The Pirates scored three unanswered goals in the first half. The Bobcats rallied to tie the match at 3-3 before conceding two late goals.
Following the split, PHSC sits at 1-3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Bobcats were scheduled to visit New College of Florida in Sarasota on Sept. 26 for a 5 p.m. match.
