A convicted felon is accused of pointing a loaded handgun at two firefighters who were responding to a crash authorities say he caused near the Pasco-Hernando county line Sept. 18.

Daniel Thomas Hall Jr., 40, faces five charges, including two counts of aggravated assault on a firefighter or paramedic. He is being held without bond, according to the Hernando Sun.

The crash happened at the intersection of County Line Road and the Suncoast Parkway near Land O' Lakes. County Line Road runs along the border between Pasco and Hernando counties. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said investigators determined Hall was at fault.

Suspect raised gun a second time, deputies say

Two Hernando County Fire Rescue firefighters approached Hall's vehicle at the scene, according to WFLA. Hall pulled a handgun and pointed it at them, the sheriff's office said.

The firefighters told Hall to put the weapon down, and he set it on the center console. Hall then picked it back up, chambered a round and pointed it at both firefighters again, according to the sheriff's office. The firefighters ran and alerted deputies at the scene.

A deputy who had just arrived saw Hall pointing the gun at the firefighters, the Hernando Sun reported. The deputy approached the vehicle and ordered Hall to get out. Hall complied and was detained without further incident. Deputies recovered the handgun and ammunition from his vehicle.

False names and a 2003 felony conviction

Hall gave multiple false names and dates of birth before deputies identified him, according to the sheriff's office. A criminal history check showed a 2003 felony burglary conviction in Pasco County, and his firearm rights had not been restored.

Florida law increases assault charge severity

In addition to the two aggravated assault counts, Hall is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a felon and providing a false name to law enforcement. Under Florida law, aggravated assault on a firefighter is reclassified from a third-degree felony to a second-degree felony.

The sheriff's office has not released details about the crash, including how many vehicles were involved or whether anyone was injured. No court date has been announced.
